Acai berries

The Acai berry Palm

Unlike other berries, they’re highly saturated in calories and fats. Even though many of their health benefits were discovered a couple of years ago, as superfoods have gained more popularity.

Acai berries (Euterpe oleracea, ягоды асаи, التوت أكي) have a relatively sweet taste with a bit of citric acid, they are becoming more and more popular due to their excellent nutrient profile.

The acai berry contains high levels of anthocyanins and provides a high degree of antioxidant capacity.

The purple color of Anthocyanins

Anthocyanins is a scientific word derived from Greek origins: anthos which means flower and kyanos which means blue color.  Anthocyanins are water-soluble vacuolar pigments that could appear red, purple, or blue based on the pH inside them.

They participate in a parent class of molecules called flavonoids synthesized via the phenylpropanoid pathway; they’re odorless and nearly flavorless, adding to taste as a moderately astringent sensation.

Anthocyanins occur in every tissues of higher plants, including stems, leaves, roots or even green leaves, flowers, and fruits. Anthoxanthins are obvious, white to yellow counterparts of anthocyanins occurring in plants. Anthocyanins derive from anthocyanidins with the addition of pendant sugars

Food rich with Anthocyanins

Anthocyanins are believed secondary metabolites as a food additive with E number E163; they’re approved for use as a food additive in the EU, Australia, New Zealand and Lebanon.

Although anthocyanins are considered powerful antioxidants their super antioxidant property is unlikely to be conserved if the plant is consumed.

As approved by the L. Pauling Institute and European Food Safety Authority, dietary anthocyanins along with other flavonoids have little if any direct antioxidant food value following digestion.

Unlike controlled lab testing (tube) conditions, the fate of anthocyanins in vivo shows they’re poorly conserved (significantly less than 4.88%), with the majority of what’s absorbed existing as chemically modified metabolites which are rapidly excreted.

The upsurge in antioxidant capacity of blood seen following the usage of anthocyanin-rich foods might not be caused directly by the anthocyanins, but rather may derive from increased the crystals levels produced from metabolism of flavonoids.

Cancer research and its role as a natural tumor fighter

Based on the American Cancer Society, researchers are investigating the results of phytochemicals such as for an example anthocyanin and the role they could play in the human diet, by researching the possible after effects of extremely specific compounds. However, there were no strong/long studies in humans showing that any phytochemical supplement can prevent or treat cancer

Last and not least a word to say about Acai Berries

These anthocyanins found specially in Acai Berries help reduce the ramifications of aging and also have anti-inflammatory properties.

That assist and confirms the role of anthocyanins in regulating cholesterol levels and could aid in preventing heart disease.

In the us, Canada and Lebanon they are usually found as granola, or trail mix.
