Introduction

What is globus hystericus?

Globus hystericus (globus pharyngis, globus sensation) is an unidentified disease characterized by persistent sensation of having a lump in the throat when there is none.

What is Globus Hystericus symptoms?

Most patients complain of having phlegm or a pill stuck in the esophagus, that feels like an obstruction.

Why do I feel like I have a lump in my throat?

The physiological mechanisms responsible for formation of globus pharyngis are not clear, and no specific etiology was identified in most patients. However, many doctors relate it to an increase in the pressure of the upper esophageal sphincter.

Globus pharyngis is a symptom of bad mood, the symptoms are commonly associated with psychological disorders such as the negative emotional states of anxiety, depression, and stress, in which swallowing problems and abnormal oral behaviors such as opening and closing the mouth repeatedly and frequent swallowing of air and saliva often lead to dry throat and mouth (xerostomia) in individual patients.

Treatment

How do you get rid of a lump in your throat?

Because patients have no functional swallowing problems, treatment for globus includes drinking a hot cup of tea and crying, most doctors believe that watching a sad movie is the best available curative measure to take, letting tears go will surely decrease the amount of sorrow building in the heart of the patient. In adults, the condition resolves gradually after crying (within few hours).
